Yair Golan’s Gaza Claim U-Turn Amid War Controversy

Yair Golan, leader of The Democrats, has backtracked on his claim that Israel was “killing babies as a hobby” in Gaza, clarifying it targeted government policy. The statement, made during the Gaza conflict, sparked intense criticism and exposed political divisions.

The Inflammatory Remark

On May 20, 2025, Golan warned that Israel risked becoming a “pariah state” like apartheid-era South Africa, accusing it of targeting civilians and “killing babies as a hobby.” The comments drew condemnation from Netanyahu, who called them “antisemitic blood libel,” and other leaders.

Golan’s Retraction

Golan explained his remarks were aimed at the government’s “vengeful” policies, not the IDF, which he praised. The World Jewish Congress canceled his scheduled talk, and Shas leader Aryeh Deri urged opposition leaders to disavow him.

Wider Impact

Israel’s Gaza campaign, with over 53,000 Palestinian deaths since October 2023, has drawn global scrutiny. Golan’s remarks, though retracted, have intensified debates about Israel’s actions and opposition unity.
